Reval
Wikipedia: Tallinn, until 1918 called Reval, is the capital of Estonia. It lies by the Baltic sea, 80 km south of Helsinki. Originally an Estonian castle. Captured by the Danes in 1219. Retaken by Estonians in alliance with Germans (The order of Swordbrothers).
1230 Settled by German traders “which were given land and tax privileges”.
1238 Danish again.
1248 The Danish king consented that the law of the town of Lübeck was valid.
“Although Reval was Danish, the town was run by German traders and it was of great
economical importantance to keep the trade with Russia smooth.”.
1346 The Danish King sold Reval to the “Deutscher Orden” (German Order).
1471 The trade with Nowgorod came to a stop when Moscow invaded.
1481 Moscow invaded Estonia again and there was a severe pestilence.
1501-1503 Successful campaign of the Deutscher Orden against Moscow, but only as from 1514 did the trade with Nowgorod blossom again.
Most people of Reval were Germans. 50% were North Germans. They developed a tight net via the Hansetowns, where their relatives lived, just like the Grawert’s.
1561 Reval became Swedish. The Swedes curbed the privileges of the German traders.
1721, after the great Nordic war, Reval became Russian. Peter the Great of Russia allowed the old German traders to return and renewed their privileges.
